Finding the Right Lighting Control System for Your Project.
When it comes to smart lighting control systems, DALI and Casambi are two leading options, each with unique features that benefit their users.
Both systems are proving popular with lighting designers today. DALI lighting control systems were first introduced in the late 90's, it stands for Digital Addessable Lighting Interface. It is an open two-way protocol whcih provides control and communication for lighting systems. Being an open protocol, any manufacturer can use the system in their control gear which makes products from different suppliers Interoperable. Casambi is a much newer system offering users wireless lighting control through Bluetooth mesh technology.
Both DALI and Casambi systems have their pros and cons, but there are many similarities and differnces between the two systems that we will cover in this article.
What are the differences between DALI and Casambi?
DALI and Casambi stand out for their unique features and capabilities. Let’s dive into their key differences, similarities, and advantages to help you make an informed decision.
Key Differences: Wires vs. Wireless
One of the most significant differences between DALI and Casambi is how they operate:
- DALI is a wired protocol that has been a trusted standard since the late 1990s. It requires physical wiring between the controller and luminaires, making it a stable and reliable choice for large-scale installations. While DALI+ (a wireless version using Wi-Fi) is under development, traditional DALI remains a wired system.
- Casambi, on the other hand, is a wireless system that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. This eliminates the need for extensive wiring and allows users to control lighting through an app on their smartphone or tablet. It’s highly versatile and simplifies installation, making it a popular choice for retrofits and spaces where rewiring isn’t practical.
Control Range and Flexibility
- DALI: A single DALI line can cover up to 250 meters and control 64 devices. With a router, even larger networks are possible. However, changes to the system typically require physical rewiring, which can be more labor-intensive.
- Casambi: Casambi networks can control up to 127 devices in the Classic version and 250 devices with Evolution, providing ample capacity for many projects. Its wireless nature allows luminaires to be added, removed, or replaced effortlessly. However, its range is limited to approximately 80 meters, and signal interference from thick walls may need to be considered in large spaces.
Fine-Tuning and Features
Both systems allow for precise control, but the level of customization varies:
- DALI offers detailed control over dimming, color changing, emergency lighting testing, and complex scene settings, making it an excellent choice for intricate and large-scale designs.
- Casambi provides intuitive control via its app, offering features like scheduling, daylight harvesting, and compatibility with smart switches. It’s user-friendly and ideal for spaces requiring dynamic but straightforward management.
What are the similarities between DALI and Casambi?
Despite their differences, both systems share core benefits:
- Cost-Effectiveness Both systems reduce operational costs over time by optimizing energy use and simplifying maintenance.
- Versatility Whether wired or wireless, these systems can support various applications, from residential to commercial.
Which lighting control system should you choose?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—it depends on your project’s specific needs:
- For large-scale commercial projects requiring extensive, centralized control, DALI remains a proven choice.
- For smaller or retrofit installations where ease of use and installation are key, Casambi excels with its wireless flexibility.
